Cybersecurity Tips

Security awareness is the first line of defense against cybercriminals. Follow best practices while browsing the internet, using email, and computing to keep your information safe and secure.

Why should I care?

Cybercriminals and scammers are looking to steal valuable information, money, or damage your computer.

  • 600,000 Facebook accounts are hacked every day worldwide

  • 80% of data thefts occur while the victim is in the workplace

  • 64% of individuals leave their passwords written on their desk
  • 64% of individuals leave their passwords written on their desk

Be on the lookout for phishing.

Phishing is attempt to obtain sensitive information, often for malicious reasons, via electronic communication by an individual disguised as a trustworthy entity.  Don’t get hooked!

  • Spammers will try to trick you via email or phone

  • Never click a suspicious link, or give out information

  • Don’t open emails or attachments from strangers

How to spot a phish.

  • Generic greetings such as ‘Hello Bank Customer’

  • Requesting private information such as ‘Please send SSN’

  • Urgent requests such as ‘Your account will be closed’

Create a strong password

Your password is easier to hack than you think. Password complexity means an exponential increase in safety.

  1. Begin with a name or phrase you will remember, but not your own, your spouse, or children. Let’s use TV star Hannah Montana.
    • hannah

  2. Add uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

    • haNNah0713:)

  3. Consider a passphrase, combining several words.

haNNah0713:) MONtana !$ aw$0M3
